General discussion • Re: RPi 5 as a desktop daily driver?

I used an RPi4 for a year almost every day, now I have the RPi5 and it feels much faster. Now it's starting to feel like any other computer. It's only when you're doing heavy jobs that it's not quite enough.

Of course I have other computers and SBCs, but Raspberry Pi is close to my heart as I've been fiddling with them for over 10 years. The first project was Pi-hole. On an RPi2.

I bought a Radxa Rock 5B while I was waiting for a new Pi to come out. I like it too. The hardware is good but the software is unfortunately not as good. It gets there too. Slow!
I think it was also slow for RPI don't you think? The fact that it is much older than the competition and had more time to grow and the fact that it became popular among the western DIY crowd contributed to its commercial success. Now that you know how much better RPI-5 is, would you go back and use a RPI-4? I sold mine once i have seen the difference. I mean yeah, if you mind the "small" price difference (if you want to set up something headless maybe), you can still pick a pi4, but very closely priced Pi-5 is the king, there is no question. And i still think Pi also has a long way to go and still have problems to solve of its own. Rock devices don't have the same "buzz" in the west, probably because it is a Chinese brand. But it can still form a community of its own and get better (software wise) and become a strong contender. This could drive competition and i think in the end it would improve the overall quality of the SBC market and drive the prices down. Rock devices have this potential.
