Can I suggest that the Network Support HelpDesk for your Student Residential Network Service would be the best source of advice for issues relating to connecting to and using that Network.
Maybe the Network administrator/manager would not be happy to find you had circumvented the need to assent to their Terms and Conditions at sign-in.
But with a leap of the imagination, why not recreate the experience you went through with your laptop? What happens if you try to use a browser on the RPi to access some well-known Internet site, such as google.com?
Another thought is that perhaps you do already have (partial) Internet access, but that your Network provider operates a Proxy server which is blocking some of the services (protocols or sites) you need. Again, something to discuss with the Network Operator.
