The PCIe Gen 3 "hack" is one additional line in config.txt. Basically to tell the interface to enable Gen3 timing/speed. It is available now. Without enabling it the interface runs at Gen 2 speeds. Will the pcie 3 hacks be rolled into the release as automatic sometime?
You also need to be running fairly current firmware (Dec 2023 or newer) to enable booting from NVME.
My understanding is that the Pi 5 does not mean the Gen 3 jitter specification and as such it will not be enabled by default. It seems to work just fine with my setup.
