We used these cables: https://www.amazon.com/Fasgear-Delivery ... r=8-3&th=1 (rated for 5A) and cut them to access their power and ground lines and then we powered it through the Pi's USB-C port. We probed the 5V line using the Pi's 5V GPIO on the 40-pin header.
I'll have to check if we might have been using low quality wires in other parts of our setup.
They are rated at 5A for a 20V supply, the voltage drop at 20V will be in spec, that same voltage drop at 5V is too big a proportion.
