Pedantically and for clarity... Bookworm moved the _DEFAULT_ from X to Wayland on all 4B and later models with 2GB (or more) RAM. X is still installed/available and easy to switch to via raspi-config, under advanced options https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentati ... ation.htmlIt's not a Pi issue it's an OS issue. Bookworm moved from X to Wayland on all 4B and later modesl with 2GB RAM or more. Wayland doesn't use the X autostart files. The above posters are correct, the newer Pis have a different autostart location.
You will get the "new" behaviour and config requirements if you are running Wayland. You will get the old behaviour and config requirements, if you either have an older/small RAM model or have changed from the default (Wayland) to X.
Pi also tweaked the Wayfire theme to look quite similar to the old LXDE theme, so it is not immediately obvious which you are running, unless you know what to look for. Even though the top level functionally of Wayland and X are quite similar, the configuration is very different. Different files, different locations, and very different underlying architecture which impacts the security model and restricts who is allowed to interact with displays.
Unfortunately simple Google searches will likely turn up solutions and recipes that only work with the old X setup. If appropriate, adding Wayland or Wayfire to your search will likely turn up the new/relevant results.
