Raspberry Pi OS • Re: Swap memory on an M.2 storage device

Since the introduction of the Pi 4 we've had choices of RAM capacity at time of purchase. Also it is now quite common to run a Pi from an SSD type of attached storage.

Now I fully appreciate on board RAM is always faster than any SWAP file but am wondering if a 1GB Pi 4 is running from an M.2 disk is given, for example, a 3GB swap file does that effectively make it comparable to a 4GB model? I am referring to its ability to launch and run programs, not how fast it is in comparison to a 4GB Pi 4.

Am aware too of zram to effectively increase the actual RAM, again at a cost of speed.

Geffers
no
swap is used to swap out unused ram for faster reuse
swap is not used as ram
zram/zswap is a form of compression, think of it like zipping to save size.

all these steps are extra & take extra time for the cpu to do slowing the system down with extra processing.
