Pidd, thanks for sharing your specific concerns. It's helpful in case someday I would ever create something that does require mains power. Although I think what I've learned from this conversation is that it's best to use a power supply in its intact form almost always. When I think on it, there are no truly small digital consumer devices that take in AC power directly. There's almost always either a USB input or a brick that sits inside an ABS enclosure separate from the device. Perhaps this is why.

All this is happening outside away from anything flammable. (The deck is made from steel and stone and the railing is wrought iron.) That significantly attenuated my own safety concerns. But I think that the solution which various folks' nudging has pushed me to is yet safer.
