It’s common to have to choose between using some existing package that has lots of features and built-in capabilities (like a database or a web server or a pretty gui), and something home-grown that does just what you want and nothing more.
I’ve done both, and I find that I end up spending the same amount of time - in learning how to configure the first, and learning how to code the second.
One tool that might do some of what you want (and more) is RRDtool. I’m thinking of it’s abilities to keep a database and generate pretty graphs.
