Yes, I think your suggestion of extension tubes is good in general, for moderate degrees of enlargement. My past experience with other systems has been extensions do somewhat dilute the image resolution, and I don't have any truly high-resolution C/CS lenses to start with. In this case, I wanted to really make use of the sensor resolution, but at the 12 Mpixel level, that simply appears to be an expensive thing, at least as you approach a 1:1 optical system. I have some parts on order now, so I'll be interested to find out what my microscope objective setup will do.
