I only installed PINN on a USB Drive to get the OSes installed on the NVME SSD, but once the installation was completed, I never managed to boot and got the
BOOT ERROR: code 45 - 'Fatal firmware error'
Hmmm. A few people fall into a trap here.
PINN is not just an OS installer, but it is an OS boot selector. It needs to be installed on the drive you want to boot from, which in your case sounds like it should be the SSD. It cannot BOOT an OS on another drive.
If you have PINN on a USB drive, boot from it, and install various OSes to your SSD, you will end up with a hybrid system where all the boot partitions are on the USB drive with PINN and only the Root partitions will be on the SSD. This is fine if you always have the USB drive attached and always want to boot from it, but I suspect this is not what you want. (This arises from the time before you could boot directly from USB and had to boot from an SD card, but wanted to run most of your OS from a faster USB drive).

To install PINN on an NVME drive, I recommend booting the Pi with only the NVME drive attached and use the built-in Net Install feature to download Rpi Imager and install PINN directly to the NVME drive. Then use PINN to install the OSes you want to multi-boot. No need for an additional USB drive.
