Raspberry Pi OS • Re: Installing RaspberryPi OS on Debian12

Just so this doesn't confuse anyone else:

1. Raspberry Pi OS is the name of the operating system for Raspberry Pi computers. Raspberry Pi computers use ARM processors.

2. Raspberry Pi Desktop is for PC and Mac computers which use the x86 processor architecture, i.e. Intel and AMD processors. It will not run on more recent Macs which use ARM processors. (Although there may be a way to do so using an emulator).

Both of the above distributions are based on the Debian operating system (although in the case of 32-bit Raspberry Pi OS it's actually based on Raspbian, which is a specific rebuild of Debian to support the specific ARM processors Raspberry Pi 1 and Zero use, which Debian does not support. Raspbian in turn is based on Debian).

Raspberry Pi Desktop for PC and Mac is a bit old: the latest image Raspberry Pi released was in July 2022. It is therefore based on Debian 11 aka Bullseye. The OP is talking about upgrading this to a Debian 12 base, aka Bookworm, which is the current version of Debian, by installing Debian 12 on a PC, then adding certain packages from Raspberry Pi to allow using the Raspberry Pi desktop on Debian 12 on a PC.

The OPs procedure linked to above is not needed for Raspberry Pi computers. Instead, simply install Raspberry Pi OS to an SD card (or other media) using Raspberry Pi Imager in the normal way, as recommended on the official software download page at https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/.
