I should mention that when I was testing the LEDs off the Pico gpio I also tested off the 3v3 pin and it behaved the same way. In other words, the source voltage drops with the load in the same way. The Pico board pins all use a common voltage regulator so that makes sense I suppose. I'm not sure.

Using things like WS2812 do start to make a lot of sense considering the above supply changes.

Simple projects using a 9 volt battery, DC supply, or even a 5 V microcontroller give you a lot more current to work with when selecting a resistor for the LED., it seems.
