Per Eben's official launch announcement for the CM5 (https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/comput ... -sale-now/) there will be CM5s with 16GB released at some point next year:
The lack of easy physical access to the M.2 slot on the Pi 500 suggest that perhaps a future "Raspberry Pi 550" would have a different case which allows the keyboard to be removed from the top to access the M.2 slot, maybe secured using screws instead of being clipped together. But that would add more cost, both in terms of needing screws, but also in terms of tooling to make the modified injection-moulded case.
Or maybe I've got this totally wrong, and provision for POE+ and M.2 on the Pi 500 board is actually for a future all-in-one Pi which integrates monitor and keyboard into a single device.
Or a third option would be integrating the Pi 500 mainboard into a monitor instead of a keyboard. That would potentially allow such a device to have a removable flap on the front for easy access to the M.2 slot. And the user could then add a keyboard of their choice.
It will certainly be interesting to see what future products Raspberry Pi release in 2025 and 2026![Very Happy :D]()
So my guess is that some time after that, in late 2025 or some time in 2026, Raspberry Pi will release a "Raspberry Pi 550" that adds POE+ and an M.2 slot compatible with the AI hat and NVMe drives, and also bumps the RAM up to 16GB. I don't think they will call it a Pi 500+, as that name is too close to Pi 500, so too easy for folk to confuse. Pi 550 or Pi 555 or something like that would seem to be a better choice of name.16GB SDRAM variants are expected to follow in 2025.
