There was a big gap in performance between the optimised Pi OS and other OS options on the Pi 4. The graphics in the Pi 5 reduced some of the differences. NVMe on PCIe 3 also reduces some of the differences. When you read reviews of an OS on a Pi, make sure they are using a Pi 5 and state the boot configuration.
There are also differences in 1 GB and 2 GB models that do not show up in 4 GB+.
For Mint users working on a Pi 5, I use the Pi OS and install Nemo, Disks, and other stuff with no problems. The extra search facilities of Nemo are worth the change. Some of the network configuration software in Pi OS is silly but so is the Mint equivalent. Ether way, you need to learn nmcli and other commands.
