Sure, M.2 is NOT equal to NVMe!My experience is that actual NVMe drives are PCIe. Unspecified M.2 flash drives could be PCIe, SATA, or USB. Though USB is rare.and as long as your NVMe is not using SATA interface.
So better check your NVMe's specification!
All three interface type are present on a fully populated M.2 M key socket.
Some folks seem to assume that M.2 and NVMe are the same thing. That isn't the case.
Well, I see it like this:
Key B = SATA -> there is no SATA interface on the Pi, hence will not work
Key M = PCIe (x2 or x4)
Key B+M = where the fun begins = SATA or (!) PCIe (depends on the actual wiring of the device, so check your spec )
Western Digital PC SN520 NVMe SSD is such a candidate, having B+M Key but is PCIe Gen3 x2 NVMe v1.3
Key A = PCIe and USB --> is not to be considered.
