For now many years I have tested many GPIO libraries for the PI (wiringPi, Pigpio, etc...). I was not really happy with. My major concern was that the size of the libraries and their structures were not adapted to a real full control of the PI. I finally found the bcm2835 library from Mike Mac Cawley that you can find here : https://www.airspayce.com/mikem/bcm2835/.
In my opinion, this is, by far, the best PI GPIO library available. It's easy to use and quite small.
