That kernel change is incomplete. It allows a wider range of DRM modes (with different image sizes and porches, keeping the existing pixel clock and totals), but it doesn't define any new modes.
Things that can define video modes are very limited and awkward. On the console you can test out modes with kmstest -r. In X, using xrandr --newmode. For Wayland you may have to edit a configuration file to add a custom modeline.
