General discussion • Re: No RPi 5 for me.

I will readily accept the Pi 5 makes for a far better desktop than any previous Pi but I am still wondering what compelling use cases there are for a Pi 5 for makers who need GPIO access. I am sure faster is great for some uses but I'm not convinced most would need it, especially as bit-banging throughput through the RP1 seems more limited than previous Pi.

For most makers using a Pi for direct interfacing I can't see there being much benefit of a Pi 5 over a 4B or even a Zero Two W.
Likely completely depends on what you are "making"... :-)

I see the extra speed as a huge win for vision stuff, better for CAD and slicing, better for number crunching and compiling.

OTOH, it is total overkill for controls stuff that worked on a 3B, or more "embedded" stuff that works on a Zero.

It also likely depends on scale. Having a fast dev system that also runs your project, may work out better that refactoring your project to run on a more appropriately sized Pi, especially if you factor in Wayland and its impact on GUI stuff.

The other use case that needs the GPIO header is adding HATs to add some sort of extra functionality. These may benefit from the faster performance of the 5.
