General discussion • OCR project to detect dates on packaging

Hi All,

I would like to develop a system for my company and I would appreciate if somebody could guide me on the hardware and software needed to make it happen.

What I want to achive:

1 - Small touch screen where Users will input text to be compared with and press the Start or Stop button to start OCR recognition or stop it.

2- have a photoelectric sensor to detect moving packs from a conveyor belt which will have a best before printed on a section of a box.

3-detect the best before, example "JUL 28" compare to input text done by user.

4- I would like when system is on Stop to send a signal to use a 12/24v 3 light tower signal, system stop send signal for red light, system start (run) send signal to green light and incorrect or not printed text to send signal to yellow light ( stop would also be on as system becomes on stop automatically), 3 signal outputs based on system status.
Then a reset push button after yellow light to reset system and go back to green light only automatically.

I know there are commercial systems available but I would like to build my own for my company, we are on a tight budget .

Based on what I read it is possible but I would like to know what hardware to buy and where to look for coding...
